Cary NC
Dr. Miller enjoys helping families to be
able see their own strengths, develop new ways of coping and tackling problems, and achieve
their goals. She takes an individualized approach to treatment and views it as a “team effort.” Dr. Miller generally uses an eclectic or integrative approach that
takes into account the client’s goals and preferred way of communicating. Specific types of
intervention utilized include: family systems approaches,
mindfulness,

supportive
therapy, person-centered therapies, relaxation training, short-term therapy, acceptance therapy,
Interpersonal therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, social skills training, behavioral
activation, and integrative approaches.
Dr. Miller is passionate about helping all children to reach their full potential. She enjoys
learning about what makes each family unique and helping people to identify and maximize their
strengths through therapy. She helps children to minimize bothersome symptoms while also
respecting each child’s unique personality and preferences. Dr. Miller takes a solution-oriented
approach with defined and measurable goals. Some examples of these goals may be: combating
family stress from divorce, reducing anxiety symptoms, improving mood, or boosting social
skills. She desires for therapy to be not only productive, but also rewarding and comfortable for
every child (and sometimes even fun!).
Dr. Miller also understands that parenting can be challenging, especially when parenting kids
that have emotional or behavioral struggles. She enjoys working with parents to develop
effective systems without being overly burdensome or hard to maintain over time. Her vast
experience in parent coaching allows her to work with parents to get their families back on the
right track.

assessment
to guide treatment, answer difficult diagnostic questions,
and assist families in making educational decisions. She has extensive experience in
psycho-educational testing,
psychological, testing,
and
neuropsychological evaluations
with children, teens, and adults
and finds testing to be especially valuable in differentiating complex conditions where diagnosis
is not clear-cut. In addition to her personal testing experience, she has taught courses in
assessment to psychology students. She provides comprehensive testing for a range of concerns
including
educational evaluations
(
IQ Testing,
AIG Testing,
Early Kindergarten testing,
learning disability assessment,
achievement testing
), as well as
developmental and psychological assessments
for disorders like
ADHD,

an
ADHD
specialty clinic under Dr. Anastopoulous, a national expert in
ADHD
and
ADD,

gained expertise in differentiating
ADHD
from Bipolar disorder during her internship training.
She aims to make testing as enjoyable and relaxed as possible to ensure that each child performs
to his or her potential.

Dr. Miller earned her PhD and Master’s degrees in clinical psychology from the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro after receiving her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in Chapel Hill, she worked at TEACCH for
several years and gained experience and enjoyment in working with people with autism-
spectrum disorders. She learned about the evaluation of ASD in children, teens, and adults and
conducted research on obsessions in ASD vs OCD. [In addition, Dr. Miller conducted research in
social skills assessment and training in elementary aged children. During her graduate training, Dr. Miller gained expertise in several areas. Her master’s thesis
investigated early
detection of Schizophrenia as a means for prevention of
significant impairment and stress. Dr. Miller rounded out her training
by completing an internship at the Hines VA Hospital with a focus on health and medical illness
where she provided a wide range of services including extensive neuropsychological testing to
patients dealing with medical illness such as blindness, cancer, and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Miller’s strong interests in family adaptation to stress continued into her dissertation research where she looked
at how teenagers cope with having a parent with cancer. Her dissertation was funded by the
National Cancer Institute to investigate attachment, coping, and adjustment as well as post-
traumatic growth following cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Following her internship year, Dr. Miller
served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Chicago Center for Family Health where she worked with families overcoming a variety of
struggles including chronic medical illness and provided community outreach in nearby neighborhoods. She also ran the Newborn Clinic at a Family Medicine Clinic where
she provided support to women and babies in the post-partum period and trained family medicine residents in identifying patients struggling with
depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Miller has
extensive experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology and health as
well as overseeing psychological research. She enjoys teaching future mental health providers
and physicians. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Miller also conducts psychological research
at Duke University. Her research interests include: medical decision making, adherence to medical
recommendations, and incentive design to increase healthy behaviors. She is also interested in the
use of mobile health apps for pain, depression, and adherence.
Outside of work, Dr. Miller enjoys creating pottery, playing board games, reading, and spending time
with her three boys (most of the time anyways). She also likes visiting Disney World and traveling to new places.
