KRISTEN WYNNS, Ph.D.

Dr. Kristen Wynns is a specialist in children, adolescents, and families. She holds a Doctorate and Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and is a Licensed Psychologist. Dr. Wynns is experienced in individual, couples, family, group and play therapy. In addition, she has extensive experience in conducting psychoeducational evaluations across the academic spectrum, to include evaluating for learning disabilities and AD/HD as well as gifted children and adolescents. Her dissertation and published research about the effects of marital conflict on children and teenagers has cemented her special interest in working with children and adolescents dealing with divorce or marital conflict in the family. Prior to working in private practice in Cary, NC, Dr. Wynns has worked at a child development center, child and family services center, AD/HD specialty clinic, in-patient adolescent unit, and an Autism group home. Dr. Wynns has led a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists conducting evaluations of preschool children for Wake County Schools.  She has experience working with children and adolescents with a variety of common teen and childhood issues such as dealing with divorce, behavior problems, AD/HD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Bipolar Disorder, social problems, Asperger's Syndrome, depression, anxiety and phobias, obsessive/compulsive disorders, and family and school difficulties. She runs a social skills groups on a regular basis for children who have difficulty making and keeping friends, connecting to peer groups, or handling anger/frustration appropriately.  Her experience extends to working with parents and families as well.  She also works with parents of preschoolers and toddlers in helping them deal with sleep and eating problems, behavior problems, dealing with fears, and effective discipline techniques.

In addition to her specialty work with children and families, Dr. Wynns has always enjoyed seeing individual adults and couples as part of her practice. She has experience working with adults with a broad range of common concerns, such as depression and mood disturbances, anxiety, adult AD/HD and attention issues, weight issues, relationships, career/educational goal setting, assertiveness, and living a life with meaning. In her professional positions, she has worked with a very diverse client population with regard to racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr. Wynns is committed to making therapy or evaluation a positive and helpful experience for all clients.

Finally, Dr. Wynns offers specialized consultation/evaluation services for divorcing/separating parents.  In addition to comprehensive custody evaluations, Dr. Wynns consults with parents who have specific questions about visitation and parenting plans, making the transition to a two-home family, helping children at various developmental stages with the divorce process, step-parent/significant other issues, and how to reduce conflict and tension that children are often exposed to during a separation and divorce.  Dr. Wynns has been qualified as an expert witness in court and testified about custody/parenting time issues. CHRISTINA C. RUSH, Ph.D.

Dr. Rush specializes in assessing and treating children, adolescents, and college students.  She is a true Blue Devil as she received her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke University. Dr. Rush’s therapy expertise with children, adolescents, and college students focuses on issues related to adjustment, identity, and relationship issues as well as specific struggles related to anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and emotional, physical, and sexual trauma.  Her experience extends to working with parents and families, including coping with divorce and separation, sleeping disturbances, childhood obesity, and effective discipline strategies.  She is also experienced in treating adult clients facing issues related to domestic violence, separation/divorce, interpersonal struggles, anxiety, disordered eating, depression, and personal and professional goal setting.   With respect to assessments, Dr. Rush has experience in conducting psychoeducational evaluations across the academic spectrum, to include evaluating for learning disabilities, AD/HD, and giftedness.

Dr. Rush’s research and clinical work have been on the co-occurrence of disordered eating and substance use among college students.  She has traveled to college counseling centers across the country to conduct research and do presentations on this topic.  She also has a clinical interest in working with college students presenting with a broad range of concerns.  Mental health stressors can arise as students are forming their identity, having serious romantic relationships, distancing themselves from their families, and determining their desired career path.  Dr. Rush helps college students, adolescents, and children facing mental health concerns forge their identity, engage in healthy relationships, and experience academic success.

Dr. Rush has varied clinical experiences that have enhanced her expertise with children, adolescents, and college students: She has worked at
Duke’s Center for Child and Family Health, Duke’s Eating Disorders Clinic, Head Start Programs, in-patient children and adolescent wards, and domestic violence programs.  In general, Dr. Rush relies on empirically validated treatments.  She draws heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and motivational techniques.  These therapies have been extensively studied and have become best practices in the field of psychology.  They are also engaging and collaborative, which creates a team approach and fosters improvements in mood, more adaptive thoughts, and healthier behaviors that bring clients closer to their goals.  Dr. Rush is a culturally competent therapist who has extensively worked with diverse clients in Costa Rica and Miami, FL, as well as provided multi-cultural competency trainings to teachers, administrators, and clinicians.  Her work emphasizes cultural as well as individual strengths.  Her treatments and assessments are thoughtful, engaging, and strive to be a positive process of self-growth and self-improvement.
